Argentine Tango is arguably one of the most subtle and intricate of the partner dance forms to learn. Ask any Tango enthusiast - Tangueros and Tangueras never stop practicing! Social Argentine Tango requires balance, musicality, weight sharing, and the ability to "hear" your partner in a more immediate way than any other social dance form.
All of this is INCREDIBLY useful if you are a West Coast Swing dancer. More than just borrowing a few steps, in this workshop we'll explore the basics of the embrace, weight sharing, balance, walking, and how to "hear" the lead in your center. It's darn good stuff and is totally applicable to West Coast Swing.
PRICE IN ADVANCE - $25. In-advance registration closes at 11:59 pm Saturday, November 7.
PRICE AT THE DOOR – $35 cash only. (Exact change, please. Thanks!)

WHAT TO EXPECT
Argentine Tango is, for all intents and purposes, really fancy walking in a comfy embrace. Social Tango is quite different from the "Show" or "Salon" Tango that is performed on stage and on television, of course, just as normal social Swing is different from acrobatic or "showcase" Swing exhibitions.
In this workshop, we'll explore two styles of social tango - close embrace (milonguero) tango and open embrace (nuevo) tango, plus how to fluidly move between the two. We'll also touch on milonga etiquette and where to continue your study of Tango after the workshop!

DETAILS
PREREQUISITE: Some familiarity with West Coast Swing. This workshop is geared towards Westies who want a basic understanding of Tango for use in their West Coast Swing partnering work.
WHEN: Sunday, November 8, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Arrive a little early. Bring water, maybe a snack. We'll take a couple breaks.
WHERE: Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana - 4 West 43rd St., Studio A, NYC.
(Take the elevator to the 7th Fl. Then walk 1 (short) flight to the 8th Fl. for Studio A)
INSTRUCTORS: Paula Wilson & Lukas Weichert - Paula Wilson began dancing Tango 15 years ago, while a student in the Alvin Ailey School Professional Division. After finishing at Ailey, she continued to dance Tango, eventually moving to Asia, where she taught and performed, then on to Argentina in 2010, where she spent a year performing with a company, then to Europe to dance some more, before returning to the US. While attending DNI, a Tango conservatory in Buenos Aires, she was paired with German/British Tango dancer, Lukas Weichert. Lukas Weichert is originally from Leipzig, Germany, and also spent many years living in England. He began dancing Tango seven years ago, and quickly established himself as a dancer to watch. He has taught and performed in Europe, South America, and the US. An award-winning actor/director, as well as dancer, Lukas recently directed and starred in "Tryst", a romantic comedy feature film with Tango.
CLOTHING: Wear anything that is comfortable. Jeans (as long as you can move in them) and t-shirts are fine. Yoga pants or leggings with a skirt over them are pretty common, as well. Bring an extra shirt.
SHOES: Any clean footwear that lets you rotate comfortably is fine. Followers, you will spend much of your time on the balls of your feet. Salsa heels, slim line jazz shoes, or your West Coast Swing shoes are fine. Dance sneakers or "character" shoes are not comfortable. Grippy rubber soles are bad — your knees will die. NOTE: It's good to change into your clean dance footwear after arriving, to preserve the floor. If it rains, definitely change into clean, dry footwear after arriving. Thanks.
WHAT ELSE TO BRING: (a) Water. Maybe a snack. (b) An extra shirt, preferably two extras. (c) Carry your dance footwear and change into it/them after you arrive. (d) Gum. Toothbrush. Deodorant. Please. (d) All your friends. (e) A smile! (You don't have to wear it, but you should have one handy just in case the need arises.)
