See you on the dance floor!
TIPDI's new home as of 2017 is the brand new Joffrey Dance Center, a terrific performing arts space in Long Island City, Queens, just one stop on the subway from Manhattan. The address is 47-10 Austell Place, 4th Fl., Long Island City, Queens, New York. The entrance is a gleaming glass front in an industrial section of LIC. The streets are still cobblestone around the building, in fact.
The nearest subway station is on the '7' train line, "Hunter's Point Av" and then a 13 minute walk.

AIRPLANE
1. You can fly to JFK (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or Newark (EWR) airports.
2. From JFK airport, the cheapest way to Midtown Manhattan is also one of the fastest: Take the AirTrain monorail service ($5, runs 24/7, 15-25 minutes) from your airline terminal to "Jamaica Station," a major regional commuter station. At Jamaica Station, take an LIRR commuter train ($5-8, runs 24/7, about 20 minutes) to Penn Station in Manhattan. Then walk to DANY Studios (about 6 minutes walk up 8th Ave). An alternative is to take a taxi, about $55, about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.
Here are the AirTrain + LIRR details, because it is hard to piece all this together from online sources:
3. If you plan to fly to LaGuardia (LGA) or Newark (EWR), and do not know how to get from the airport to Midtown Manhattan, please contact us directly at [email protected], and we will give you detailed instructions.
TRAIN
Train service is a great way to come to New York City. You will arrive in Penn Station, between 31st & 33rd St., and between 7th & 8th Avenues, very close to TIPDI at DANY Studios. Amtrak offers very comfortable, fast inter-city train service from Boston to Washington, DC. NJ Transit and LIRR offer fairly comfortable commuter train service to New Jersey and Long Island respectively. Several NYC subway lines (A, C, E and 1, 2, 3) also stop in Penn Station, with several more subway lines just one Avenue away at 6th Avenue (B, D, F and M, N, Q, R).
BUS
You can take a bus from anywhere to New York City. The larger commercial bus companies such as Peter Pan and Greyhound usually arrive in the huge Port Authority station at 8th Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets. You can very easily walk to TIPDI at DANY Studios — just two short blocks down 8th Avenue (opposite direction than traffic) to 38th St, literally 2 minutes walk. There are also many independent bus companies offering inter-city bus service to NYC, usually for under $25. Most of those buses stop on a corner somewhere near Penn Station. Those bus stops are scattered all around Penn Station to reduce congestion, so we cannot tell you exactly where you will arrive. You can walk to TIPDI at DANY Studios from most of these stops in about 10-15 minutes, or you can take a taxi (about $5, probably about 3-10 minutes, depending on where your bus stop is).
AUTOMOBILE
You can drive to TIPDI from anywhere. However, parking in Midtown Manhattan is insanely expensive, and driving is almost always slower than walking, taking the subway, or taking a taxi (because you don't have to find parking for the taxi). We do not recommend bringing a car into Manhattan.
GETTING AROUND WITHIN NEW YORK CITY
New York City is a great walking city, and has one of the world's great public transportation systems. The buses and subways run 24 hours. The subways are fast, clean, and safe. The buses, while slow, are also clean and safe. Most of us who live here walk or take the subways, using an "unlimited" MetroCard ($31 for 7 days, $113 for 30 days) or a regular MetroCard ($2.50 per ride). When we're feeling lazy, or super-late at night when the subways run less frequently, we'll sometimes take a taxi, which are nearly all safe, clean, smoke-free, and they all take credit cards (by law). In fact, NYC is now one of the safest big cities in the world. Walking, even late at night, is rarely a problem in the lively areas.
1. You can fly to JFK (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or Newark (EWR) airports.
- Suggestion: Pack at least one pair of dance shoes in your carry-on luggage, in case of luggage snafus in transit.

Here are the AirTrain + LIRR details, because it is hard to piece all this together from online sources:
- Inside JFK airport, to find the AirTrain, follow the small, not-obvious AirTrain signs in your arrival terminal.
- Before stepping on the AirTrain, look at the television monitors over the train doors. Be sure to take a "Jamaica Station" train. Do NOT take a "Howard Beach" train! The trains are labeled only on the television monitor over the train doors — not inside the trains.
- Jamaica Station is the last stop. When the train stops and everyone gets out, get out.
- Pay the $5 AirTrain fare as you exit at Jamaica Station. To do this, buy a $5 MetroCard from the vending machines at the exit gates and use it immediately.
- At Jamaica Station, after you pass through the $5 payment gates, walk straight forward to the end of the large hall and turn left, and go out the doors. You will be standing outdoors on the open-air LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) platform, with the train tracks below you. (At the far end of the LIRR platform, you can find elevators to the subway system, but you do not need the subway here. The LIRR trains are much faster.)
- Take an LIRR train to "Penn Station" (about $5-8, about 20 minutes, usually on Track 1 or 2 but check the signs carefully). Buy your LIRR ticket at the vending machines on the platform above the tracks. Penn Station is the last stop. When the train stops and everyone gets out, get out. Go upstairs with everyone else to the main arrival/departure area.
- Penn Station is in midtown Manhattan, between 31st & 33rd St., and between 7th & 8th Avenues. It is a huge, confusing, underground complex. When you exit your LIRR train, you will be confused. Look for signs directing you towards 8th Avenue, or towards the A, C, E subway (which runs under 8th Avenue). Find an 8th Avenue exit, it doesn't matter which one, and walk upstairs to the street.
- From Penn Station, the fastest way to TIPDI at DANY Studios (305 W. 38th St., at corner of 8th Avenue) is to walk up 8th Avenue in the same direction as traffic to 38th St., about 6 minutes walking time. Turn left onto 38th Street. DANY Studios' entrance is on your right, a red steel door with a red awning above.
- TIP: In Manhattan, allow 1 minute walking time between "Streets" such as 37th St to 38th St, and allow 3 minutes walking time between "Avenues" such as 7th Ave to 8th Ave. Typically, walking is faster than any other form of transportation for relatively short distances. In NYC, people walk.

- If you are going to spend time in NYC and have an iPhone, we recommend the iPhone app iTrans NYC Subway ($4), which shows an excellent subway map, scheduled subway arrival times, and for a few subway lines, the exact "live" time until the next train. It also shows service and emergency alerts.
- The NYC subways run 24/7, but late at night, it gets complicated. Some subway lines in NYC change from "express" to "local" service after 10:30 pm (e.g,. the A train), or after midnight (the 2 train). Some subway trains only run on part of their line late at night (e.g., after midnight, the 3 train only runs between 42nd St and its uptown stops) or stop running completely (e.g, the C train, because the A runs locally and therefore stops at all C train stops). On weekends some local trains do not run at all (e.g., the B train), with their duties taken over by different trains. It is complicated. Watch the locals. If a gate is closed off with pink tape, don't go there. If you are waiting for an express late at night and a local train arrives, it is almost always faster to take the local. New Yorkers are generally friendly and will help you find where you need to go.
