What is West Coast Swing (WCS)?
West Coast Swing (WCS) is a social dance form that emerged on the West Coast of the US. It’s a descendent of the Lindy Hop scene of the East Coast. A mixture of slow Lindy Hop, hip hop, and improv, the form also borrows heavily from other partner dance forms, including Salsa, Tango, and more recently, Zouk. Also known as "Modern Swing" or "Club Swing", WCS is danced to contemporary pop, rock, R&B, funk, afropop, and alternative music, rather than Big Band Swing.
In North America, the WCS scene is very diverse, and still has roots in the black Lindy Hop scene. In Europe, however, this is not the case. Paula Gammon Wilson is one of only 5 internationally ranked West Coast Swing dancers of the African Diaspora in Europe currently. She would like to introduce more black and brown movement enthusiasts to the form.
